I think in many cases a couple who can communicate openly may be able to resolve their problems without outside help.

I can imagine it’s awkward if one person suggests a counselor that the other isn’t comfortable with.

I also think for a marriage counselor to be effective, both people would have to be confident in their abilities.

I think we’ve all probably heard about one party who wanted to proceed with a counselor while the other didn’t.
