Face to face counselling I believe is much more effective, but then, again, it will deter people who are ashamed to confide on a one-on-one basis that really need the help. I remember going to the priest confessional at one of our local churches and asking for advice behind the screen. There is just something about being "anonymous" that makes us come clean about our problems. As Liza says, non verbal communication tells a large part of anyone's story, and that would be hidden on the phone.
