A popular counseling portal on the web, The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory, has just made available two networks of licensed, professional counselors and therapists who do phone counseling.
The practice of phone counseling has been around, in one form or another, since the advent of the telephone. It is useful today for people who have limited access to transportation or few therapists who practice in their area. It is also usefully for those going through intense emotional turmoil, who need to speak to a counseling professional right away.
The unique nature of the phone counseling now available is that when the consumer goes to the phone counseling page, located here: http://family-marriage-counseling.com/phone-counseling.htm.
That person can immediately see the counselors that are available for a live session. Counselors are listed by name, with a photo, and short pragraph about them or their counseling specialties. The two networks of therapists who provide the connection services are Luminent and Kasamba. They are well respected providers of online phone counseling.
The Family & Marriage Counseling Directory has been around since 2003, and is one of the top ranked counseling websites on the internet. It lists over 300 therapists, located in cities throughout the United States and Canada. It also provides counseling resources, self-help counseling alternatives, and articles written by counseling professionals from different backgrounds. The site was started Chris Hartwell, MSW, a social worker, who stays involved with the ongoing changes in the counseling fields, and maintains therapist listings.

This makes total sense, especially if you don’t want the therapist to see who you are! I have always believed that counseling needn’t take place face to face. Problems can be discussed over the phone just as well as in an office.
I agree Sagemother. Sometimes a face to face is just too embarassing and the answers we seek can easily be given over the phone. There are even websites that offer counseling from professionals. I think it’s about time.
Face to face counselling does have its place because I person may be saying one thing and the facial expressions and body language is saying something else. It is easier on the counsellee though, I will agree.
I can’t agree that phone counselling is better. As Liza says, non verbal communication tells a large part of anyone’s story, and that would be hidden on the phone. It is better than no counselling though, and might be a way to continue counselling after all parties know each other well.
There are certain important body language that can’t be picked up with a phone counselor and I would think that very important. Soon, when face-to-face speaking is possible online, those concerns may not matter.
Debrajean, the concept’s been around since the beginning of time, it’s more popular and accepted now because technology has had a chance to improve on how we can get advice.
I remember going to the priest confessional at one of our local churches and asking for advice behind the screen. There is just something about being “anonymous” that makes us come clean about our problems.
Liza, people tend to weave a different story especially when they are trying to get a sympathetic ear to justify their actions.
Face to face counselling I believe is much more effective, but then, again, it will deter people who are ashamed to confide on a one-on-one basis that really need the help.
Green-Moo, I think it’s great that there are choices. At least they are making the extra step to get help eventhough they decide not to physically get counsel.
MollyL, I’m sure video phone calls are the next wave of phone counselling definitely.
I really can’t wait for that system to be available to the general masses at a cheap price!
I guess this is a good idea if you need a counselor, and you need one now!
Trick-r-treat, just imagine, people who are distraught can get counseling right away before they do something they will end up regretting afterwards.
This is a very good idea. People who are in need of help are often reluctant to access face to face counselling and sometimes it is not possible to find suitable help at the time it is needed. Phone counselling is a very useful alternative.
Justintime, I really have missed my calling…. instead of opening up a site where people can talk about their “cheating” problems, I should have opened a counseling number instead.
